Wellness Wednesdays at Sheridan

Sheridan College is hosting a Wellness Wednesday every week until the 4th of December. Each week comes with a different 20-minute mindful meditation that focuses on personal well-being and bringing the community together.

Wellness Wednesday is presented by Counselling and Wellness Services at Sheridan. The centre’s manager, Leah State, says that wellness is something that is very important for the students to take advantage of:

“Wellness is pre-conditioned for learning. It sort of underpins all of our brain functions. So, it’s important for students because students are here to learn. We have to change the narrative around wellness to make it be more of a day, a week, a month of ongoing daily practice not only for individuals, but also as a community.”

Ajane Yogeswaran, a student at studying at the HMC campus at Sheridan, says that she attends Wellness Wednesdays every other week to get herself back on track and grounded:

“I deal with a lot of things at home and I love to meditate but just don’t have a quiet household.”

Teanna Walker, a student studying at the University of Toronto, says that she recently became aware of Wellness Week and thinks it is an important part of her school’s community:

“I heard about it last year and took part in some of the events. I recently started going to the Wellness Wednesday yoga classes in my school to prepare for the long classes I have throughout the day. Wednesday is my busiest day, so I have to make sure that I don’t get irritated or tired.”

A wheel of awareness, as seen in the graphic below, is one of the mindful meditations that happen at Sheridan’s wellness sessions. It is a practice that helps direct attention and improve focus.

Sheridan offers many other wellness activities throughout the week including a mood route, where you walk outdoors to get your mind off things.

Trafalgar Campus: Mood Routes – Every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. by the Athletic Centre. Wellness Wednesday Meditation Sessions – Every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in C104 Fitness Classes – Monday through Friday at Trafalgar and Davis Campus

Davis Campus: Mood Routes – Every Thursday from 12 p.m. – 12:50 p.m. by room B230 for meet up Walking Wednesdays – Every Wednesday at 1 p.m. by the pond Wellness Wednesday Meditation Sessions – Every Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. in J314 Fitness Classes – Monday through Friday at Trafalgar and Davis Campus
