Career month at Sheridan: workshops and fairs to help you get a job

This November marks Canada’s fourth annual National Career Month. Sheridan is participating with several events and workshops both students and graduates can attend. These events will be happening across all three campuses.  This year’s theme is, “explore the possibilities.”

The purpose of the month-long event is to create and advance discussions about the future of employment for students in the country. The national event is organized by the Canadian Council for Career Development (CCCD).

Donalee Bell, interim chair for the committee, says, these events “have really raised the bar in awareness of the importance of career development.”

There are ten events in total that students and graduates are encouraged to attend. The first was a workshop for Career Hacks on October 29. The others are listed below.

Career Hacks events include six different workshops. Career Ready is another event that is based on three different workshops. The workshops vary from finding your strengths to resume hacks, decoding an interview, and employer expectations.

Along with the workshops, there will be two career fairs. Sheridan’s Business Career Fair will be on November 9 at the HMC campus. This event is for all students and graduates searching for jobs in the business sector. On November 14, the STEM Career Fair will take place at the Davis campus. This fair is specifically for students and graduates looking for work opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Both career fairs allow attendees to ask questions, find out about current job openings, and how to apply them to jobs. Students and graduates will also get a chance to have their professional LinkedIn photos taken.

“Be yourself, the employers are people too, they’re there because they’re interested in learning more about the students. They wanna connect with you,” says Sandra Yu, employment development specialist.

Those attending the event should bring their resume and OneCard, proof of current term course enrollment, or alumni card to the fair. You can also prepare for the fair by visiting the career centre for resume assistance and additional tips.

The fair has several employers who attend in hopes of having fair-goers looking for a job come to their booths. Employers wanting to recruit part-time, full-time, co-op, new graduate, summer or contract are encouraged to fill out the registration form online. The registration fee for employers is $150 + HST.

Students can register online for the fairs, as well as follow Career Month on social media using #careermonth.
