Athletic Therapy Students Honoured

Sheridan’s Athletic Therapy Students were recognized on the field for their internships.

The recipients Dylan Langlois and Samantha Raymond were surrounded by family and friends supporting them moments before making their way to the field. From their seats across the Rogers Centre, the Langlois family showed him how excited they were by holding up letters spelling “GO DYLAN.”

“All the people who came out and supported me today, that was a really awesome feeling to see the signs and then to get that recognition from the staff that I’ve been working under, it was a true honour for sure,” says Langlois.

This year, Langlois was awarded an internship with the Toronto Blue Jays, which allowed him to work at the Rogers Center’s Athletic Therapy clinic. Langlois has always had a strong interest in sports, and his parents instilled in him the belief that the relationships you develop when participating in sports matter most.

“We’ve always told them it’s about the connections you’re going to make, the relationships you’re going to have. And this is obviously a huge opportunity for Dylan to make connections and build relationships with people in a field that he’s very interested in continuing with,” says Rebecca Langios, Dylan’s mother.

After sustaining many injuries over the years and COVID-19 shaking up many people’s lives, Samantha Raymond’s included, she decided to attend Sheridan to pursue a career in athletic therapy. We spoke to Raymond about her experience in sports medicine this past summer with The National Ballet of Canada.

“That internship was a dream come true,” says Raymond.

Now entering her final year at Sheridan, Raymond’s plans to pursue Athletic Therapy with a focus on dance. With the knowledge she has learned and will continue to learn in her final year at Sheridan, she’s finding that the internship was “exactly where [she] needed to be.”

“Merging AT with dancing was very much where I saw my career going,” says Raymond.

She was previously involved with the Jr. Jays Club during the last year she did dance. She found it to be an interesting “full circle moment” to end up back on the field for the awards.

“It was very surreal. It was incredible, and will definitely remain as a career highlight for whatever happens in the next few years. I’ll always remember that for sure,” said Raymond.

Athletic Therapy’s program field placement coordinator Julie Dickson also had some insight to add while speaking about having Journalism students cover the event.

“I’m really happy we can bring our journalism students into this environment as well and give you guys some real life kind of exposure,” said Dickson.

“Having an experience like this is invaluable [and] there’s nothing that can compare to real life experience,” said Dickson

She feels it’s nice to see the Athletic Therapy students be recognized for their achievements.

“There’s always a sense of pride seeing our students be successful.”

“At the end of the day it’s 100% their achievement and their accomplishment.” says Dickson.

After all the hype of the awards settled, everyone enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals in a home game that ended 7-2.
