Parisian artist spreads his message of love

STORY BY BRIDGET LAUR, MABEL WILLIAMS, AND TARRAH HABIBI

B. Boukau, more commonly known as Boukko, was born in Paris, France in 1987. He held a pop-up exhibit between October 17th and 21st in the Marais district of Paris displaying his “Love Is Us” collection.

Boukko said that the inspiration behind this collection came from wanting to bring people together instead of focusing on what divides us. His work expresses his message of love through the universal symbol he uses called Boukus. A simple smiley face with heart eyes and a scar.

“I’ve learned with experience that not everybody is good, of course. But the first time I see someone, I see love. I see someone like me,” says Boukko. His work is in a gallery in Belgium but he mostly travels to share his art. A piece featured in a separate section of his Paris gallery displayed people, animals, and national symbols all connected by Boukko’s signature Boukus face. Sharing a message of how we are still connected by love, despite our differences.

He did not start painting on a canvas until he was 21 when his friend asked him to try. Previously he would create art on anything around him. He puts most of his art on a canvas now as it is the most common to be put in a gallery, but he does not enjoy one way of creating over another.  His gallery displayed paintings on bikes, t-shirts, pianos, sweatshirts, skateboards, etc. His art is almost like a brand with his signature symbol of Boukus on everything he creates. Boukko uses spray and acrylic paint to create his art. Even using cans of used spray paint to create a rainbow with Boukus dotted all over them.

“Love is sharing, not judging, letting others come as they are,” he said when asked what love means to him.

His art can now be seen at The Monkey Business Gallery at 30 Rue des Rosiers in Paris. Boukko regularly updates his social media and his website where his art can be purchased.
