The Sheridan Bruins men’s soccer team remained in third place following a 1-1 draw with Niagara College Tuesday afternoon.
The result means that Sheridan maintains third place in the central division but is now tied with Niagara.
With playoff positioning on the line the Bruins opened the game with a controlled attack.
Bruins striker Jean Francis Mkomo seemed to find the net in the opening minute only to have the goal called back.
The only other quality chance for the Bruins came when defender Chiron Robinson’s volley struck the crossbar.
The two close chances were all the Bruins had at halftime following another lacklustre first 45 minutes.
Niagara failed to score in the first half as well with their only real scoring chance going off both posts before staying out.
Both teams entered the half with nothing to show for their slow starts.
The intensity picked up in the second half with Sheridan providing some early offensive chances.
The Knights defence would tighten up shortly after as the Bruins lone striker was swarmed by defenders at every chance.
The next chance came in the 58th minute when the Knights goalkeeper saved a Bruin free kick attempt.
The next set piece fell to Niagara in the 61st minute and the Knights made no mistake on the corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.
Trailing for the third time in three games appeared to wake the Bruins up as they pressed hard for an equalizer.
A 79th minute corner kick found the open head of Bruins defender Sheldon Rogers who made no mistake, tying the game at 1-1.
The Bruins team celebrated emphatically on the sidelines following the goal, a mirror reaction to the Knights following their goal.
With 10 minutes left to play both teams opened up their play to try and claim the victory.
With the game ending tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes the Bruins snapped their two game losing skid.
The two teams are tied with 11 points apiece in the Central division with the season coming to a close.
“They were capitalizing on our mistakes, at the end of the day, if they capitalize on their mistakes, then they’re going to those opportunities,” , said striker Hardip Grewal.
“Well obviously we’re hoping for a win, but a tie is better than a loss, so we need to go out and try to win every single other game,” said Grewal
Head coach Andrew Seuradge also commented saying, “a tie is good for us, keeps us in the third seed.”
The Bruins now look ahead to the Saturday Oct.15 home game against the Humber Hawks.
“I think we’re going to have a good game against them, last time we met it was one of our mistakes that led to them scoring in the 80th minute, so it should be a good game,” said Seuradge
