Milton Transit’s annual Stuff a Bus is a good cause for the community and any family going hungry around Thanksgiving.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, Milton Transit hosted its annual Stuff a Bus event in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank. The bus was placed outside Metro at 1050 Kennedy Circle with help from volunteers to collect and fill the bus with donations.
Jennifer Smith who works for Milton Transit is one of those volunteers.
“No family should have to go hungry and so this is a way to take an already existing community service and partnering with other essential services in town,” said Smith.
The event is a partnership between Metro, Milton Transit and the Salvation Army, and the donated non-perishable food items replenish the shelves of the food bank in Milton.
Rick Wiebe who is a service provider for Milton Transit who also volunteers for the event.
“We see the community for what it is. People that are outgoing, when they see someone in need they come to their aid,” said Wiebe.
The town of Milton hosts a Stuff a Bus even three times per year: Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas, during the Santa Claus Parade.
“The stuff-a-bus program gives Milton Transit the opportunity to give back to help support our community in a meaningful way,” said transit
coordinator Tony D’Alessandro. “Our staff really enjoy volunteering for this event and spending time with residents.”
“Most of the volunteers are just everyday workers at Milton Transit coming to the needs of the people. For us we’re just one form of people being able to come to those aids,” said Wiebe.
The public is great at helping people when they’re in need. Just a small donation like a can of corn can go a long way.
According to Smith and Wiebe, the town of Milton always plays a great part in insuring the food bank is filling up from events like this.
