If you’re a PlayStation gamer and just achieved your first platinum trophy (or you’re not quite there yet), you may have found it to be slightly frustrating at times or even pointless chasing the dream. Collecting platinum trophies is an enjoyable journey, but only if you choose to make it one.

PlayStation user Evan Bogahalanda achieved his first platinum trophy in 2013 but has been actively collecting them for six years.

Here are Evan’s eight tips on how to collect platinum trophies while having a great time doing so.

1. Play your favourites

Sometimes playing through a game you don’t like isn’t worth the time and effort. Simply play what you want!

Evan thinks it’s okay to skip games you don’t enjoy just for the sake of a platinum trophy. “Games are meant to be enjoyed and experienced,” he said.

2. Experiment with genres

It’s a good idea to change up your game habits, play titles in different genres. There’s so many games out there so take a chance on them. Like most things in life, don’t knock it ‘til you try it. If a genre isn’t for you, just move on until you find something you enjoy!

“Platinum hunting will expose you to new games you might have never played before,” said Bogahalanda, “which allows you to experience new concepts and ideas you might not normally see in your life.”

3. Access resources

Stuck? Well almost every game has a guide, public forum or videos you can use to get some help. Do your research to platinum efficiently.

“Look for tips, strategies and optimal routes if you want to finish quickly,” said Bogahalanda, “More importantly, check to make sure a game you want to platinum doesn’t have unobtainable or bugged trophies to save yourself the trouble later.”

4. Focus on yourself

Keep your head down and don’t compare yourself to others who have been platinuming longer than you. You’re on the right track.

“Looking at profiles and seeing who’s got what platinum trophies, completion rates and rarity percentages will only make the hobby less enjoyable,” said Bogahalanda.

5. Help others out

There will be games that sometime require parties to obtain certain trophies. If you’re going to look for help, make sure you return the favour and help others out too. You never know who you’ll meet.

“On many occasions you’ll meet plenty of people that want help for what they need but aren’t willing to stick around to help others,” said Bogahalanda. “Don’t be selfish and help everyone you can.”

6. Stay true to the system

Once people get addicted to seeing their number of platinum trophies go up, many turn to shovelware which makes for an easy checkmark. Remember why you started this journey and don’t try to cheat the system.

“Resorting to cheap games that hand out a platinum in under an hour, essentially rewards players for their money,” said Bogahalanda. “These purchasable trophies corrupt the system and devalue what it means to earn a platinum trophy.”

7. Make it a challenge

If platinuming is getting easy or stale, don’t be scared to give yourself a challenge to really push yourself. Change it up by trying to platinum games in different difficulty levels or give yourself a time limit. Be creative, the options are endless.

“You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you stick with what you’re comfortable with,” Bogahalanda said.

8. It’s just a game

At the end of the day, you’re playing games and there is more to life than getting platinum trophies. Don’t take it too seriously and keep your priorities in check.

“Playing games can be a lot of fun and have its benefits too,” said Bogahalanda. “But don’t let it take you away from other priorities in your life that need attention. In the end, a platinum trophy has no real-world value, so don’t let it take meaning out of what matters most.”

With Evan’s eight tips you’ll be on your way to collecting platinum trophies, but also experience new games, gain achievements and meet new people along the way.
