Have you ever wanted to get into film photography, but you aren’t sure where to start? Then, you’re in the right place! Everywhere recently is littered with fake, AI. generated images. We are missing authenticity—the core of the art form itself.  Shooting on film is the most authentic way to capture the moment. We spoke to experienced photographer Scottie Turner or ‘Beachgollum’ as he is known on Instagram, about the best way to start. Here are his insights.

Find a camera that works best for you

First, you’ll need a camera that isn’t already built into your phone. Luckily for you, there are thousands of cameras to choose from. A really great way to get film cameras is at your local antique store. They should have a variety of cameras from different eras. Most commonly, people find cameras from the 60’s. If old cameras aren’t your jam, that’s fine too! Surprisingly, there are many modern film camera alternatives. Modern film cameras such as the Pentax 17 or the Kodak Ektar H35 are great options if you are looking for something new. The most important thing though is finding one that suits your personal needs best. You want the camera to work for YOU more than anything.

Experiment with different types of film

Similarly to discovering a film camera that works for you, investigating what film you prefer is also a series of trial and error and that is okay. There are a variety of film options out there, including colour negative, black and white, and instant. Different types of film work for different types of photography. black and white offers a unique look. I think black and white is more about the shape of an object when I’m photographing it, or how the lighting will turn out without the flash.” Turner said. It also captures lighting far better than any other types of film. Shooting with colour negative film is all about capturing life like moments. Every shot will be bright and vibrant. Lastly, instant photography is great for in the moment photography. With a built-in printer, Instant photography is a great way to capture the moment, making it best suited for intimate moments with friends and family.

Its an expensive hobby – be prepared!

Film photography can be pricey, but it is worth it in the end. Turner—our beloved photography expert—says not to let it sway you away from getting into film photography, and that your passion is well worth it. The average role of film costs between $10 and $20. Not to mention, it is then between $10 to $30 to get your film developed. Additionally, you have to keep the price of a film camera on its own in mind. This can be daunting, we understand. However, as Turner highlights, “nothing can capture the beauty of real life like film can.” said Turner. It is a truly unique experience. What’s so great about film photography is that you can take it at your pace. If you want to take it slow and just as a hobby, that’s a great option! If you want to be more active in pursuing the hobby, shooting constantly or turning it into a future career pathway, that is also an incredibly accessible option.  Taking photography at your pace is one of the best aspects of the hobby.

Interesting locations are everywhere

Turner suggests starting small when deciding to shoot.

“You don’t need to take pictures of mountain ranges or rocket ships.” He said.

Starting at home is a great way to practice your craft and get a feel for the hobby. Capturing images of household objects or even family members is an easy way to learn about lighting, depth, and framing. When you feel ready to take that next leap, move to hiking trails or your own backyard, and start experimenting more with advanced film photography techniques. Get up close to plants and bugs. It is such a fun way to mix nature and technology—the natural and unnatural mixing together to create something truly beautiful. A moment captured in time.

Final advice

Whether you’re shooting on colour or black and white, at home or in the wild, film photography is a creative journey, and one that gives you such a rewarding feeling. Unfortunately, this is a hobby that is fading out, and the hope is that, with a little more knowledge, we can bring it back to life again. All you got to do is give it a chance. We hope that we convinced you to pick up a camera and capture your moment.
