Students in college and university in the last year have had a challenging time finding jobs. Last year, the employment rate for returning students aged 15 to 24 was 46 per cent, the lowest rate since 1998.
Some students say its difficult or almost impossible to find part time jobs because schedule or classes. As well, the required studying in between classes, should require 40 to 50 hours per week. That will leave a small amount of time available. However, it should not be devoted to regular employment.
“it’s different. If you’re going into a specific field,” Said Jacob Piskorosky, a first year student from Networking Engineering.
There is also a concern about foreign workers taking jobs from Canadian students and it is a complex issue with different perspectives to consider. For instance the presence of international students can increase competition for jobs.
For Ontario college students working while attending school can be a demanding experience characterized by a constant need to juggle class schedules, study time, and work hours.
Paying tuition is another burden that Ontario college students have to deal with. Tuition costs have increased significantly over time and are disproportionately high for students from low-income families. Some students are fortunate enough to have help from their family to pay tuition but many students in Ontario have to rely on the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) which helps students pay for tuition and other expenses.
Then also there is the factor of paying rent for a place to live whether you’re near the campus or not it still effects most students. The cost of living has also increased, making it difficult for students to pay for housing. Its hard for some to be able to even find a one bedroom place to live, on the other hand some students don’t have to face the hurdle, many live with their parents and commute.
“I am balancing my job and school and it currently and it’s OK for now,” said Mariam Shah, a first year student from Early Childhood Education.
Many Ontario college students must have a plan to budget all their expenses and some diligently plan before the schooling begins. There are budgeting apps students can get that tracks your income and spending, fortunately for students in Canada there is some help to aid in all the budgeting and expenses because many Canadian businesses and organizations offer discounts to students
There is a noticeable difference though in students who are part time or full-time students, all though finding a job while going to school is difficult and hard to balance part time students do have an easier time finding work.
