Sheridan College is taking part in the new William G. Davis Innovation Fund to help celebrate its 50th anniversary with 23 other colleges in Ontario.
The Innovation Fund, named after Davis, who is considered the “father” of the community college system, is a contest for graduates or current full-time students.
Applicants will pitch their original ideas for new projects to improve Ontario in the disciplines of entrepreneurialism, health, welfare, arts, culture or community benefit. They will need to be able to clearly describe their idea and how the success of it will be measured.
“In the past our students have excelled in developing entrepreneurial and innovative projects in their disciplines,” said Mary Preece, Sheridan’s President and Vice Chancellor. “Creativity is embedded in Sheridan’s DNA so we look forward to seeing what comes forward from our students and alumni for this special fund.”
Online registration begins on March 1, at amazing50.ca/innovationfund
The last day to submit your application is May 30. The detailed timeline for submissions, rules and voting are available online.
The winners will be announced on Nov. 10, as well as the honourable mentions in each category. The first-place winner will receive $15,000 and the idea with the second most votes wins a $5,000 prize.
“Over the ensuing months, a series of events are planned at Sheridan’s campuses in Oakville, Brampton and Mississauga to engage students, alumni, staff and the wider community in celebrating Sheridan’s anniversary, its past and future,” said Susan Atkinson, manager of Communications and Media Relations at Sheridan College.
Some of these events include:
- A gala for industry and community partners in February
- Grand opening of the Hazel McCallion Campus in March
- A special Welcome Back Event for all employees in August
- Homecoming event celebrating Sheridan’s proud history of athletic success in September
Other activities include the creation of a travelling exhibit showcasing Sheridan’s history, which will make stops at each campus over the course of the year.
“In addition, Sheridan plans to participate in a number of events being coordinated by the advocacy organization, Colleges Ontario, including a Community Day event in April, and a visit by the Colleges Ontario bus in October,” said Atkinson.
