MONDAY – Saying goodbye to Luke Perry
A not-so-great start to the week. We learned that Luke Perry passed away in California at the age of 52. Perry had suffered a massive stroke less than a week before his death. The Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale actor died while surrounded by his close friends and family.
TUESDAY -A cure for HIV
A possible cure? News broke Tuesday, March 5 when an HIV-positive man was reported to be functionally cured of the sickness. The man was treated at University College London and Imperial College London through using a stem cell transplant. The transplant was from a donor who carried a rare genetic mutation. Even though there is a lot of work to be done regarding this research, the future for treating AIDs with science looks promising.
WEDNESDAY – SNC-Lavalin case
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former principal secretary Gerald Butts in the spotlight last week. Butts told his side of the SNC-Lavlin scandal before the House Justice Committee. He has claimed that “nothing happened” beyond the normal government operations regards to the case.
THURSDAY – Autism Protest in Toronto
Hundreds gathered at Queen’s Park over the autism program changes. Families of children with autism made sure their voices were heard when asking for a reverse to recent changes to Ontario’s autism program. The families that attended say that they will face financial ruin to pay for autism therapies for their children. The intensive therapies can cost up to $100,000 a year. It has been said that this has been the largest autism protest in Ontario history.
FRIDAY – Paul Manafort
It looks as though the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort will be doing some jail time. Due to tax and bank fraud related to his work advising Ukrainian politicians, Manafort will be spending nearly four years in prison. Sentencing guidelines originally called for a 20-year term. This has caused some outrage and controversy. Some describe the sentence as “lenient” and “unfair”. Do you agree with the sentence?
