Months after ‘Driver’s License’ hit our Spotify and Apple music screens, the newest pop star has dropped her highly anticipated debut album ‘SOUR’.
18-year-old Olivia Rodrigo has had one of the quickest rises to fame. Early this year she was just on our screens as Nina in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+, and by January 12th Rodrigo broke streaming records, and blew up all over TikTok with her first single ‘Driver’s License’, a tear-jerking ballad about teen-heartbreak.
By May, just 5 months after her record-breaking debut, she has been on multiple magazine covers, released two other singles from her debut album, ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Good 4 U’ (which also broke streaming records FYI), performed at the Brits and was invited on SNL as a musical guest. The first musical guest to be invited on without having an album released- may we add.
The central theme around ‘SOUR’ is heartbreak, from songs filled with chaotic teen angst, to slow ballads that require tissues, the album has something for everyone.
Many fans noticed that Rodrigo gave homage to her idol Taylor Swift in her song ‘1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back.’ Swift and her producer Jack Antonoff are credited because the song gives a nod to Swift’s lucky number 13 and was inspired by ‘New Year’s Day’ off Swift’s ‘Reputation’ album.
While Swift and Antonoff did not write or produce the song, the inspiration was enough for Rodrigo to credit them anyway.
Since the release early Friday morning, Twitter has been having a field day. Here are just some tweets reacting to the album:
It has been given the title of a “no skip album” by many twitter users. Rodrigo creates a linear story about heartbreak and ultimately acceptance. The different plot points and stages of this story that Rodrigo writes and sings about captivates her audience.
‘SOUR’ will definitely leave a good taste in your mouth.
