The Rundown: Spring Open House

Story By: Sarah Ballan

The first few days of Spring have come and gone just like Sheridan’s 2024 Spring Open House.

Faculty, staff and student volunteers gathered at Sheridan College’s Trafalgar campus this past Sunday to meet and inspire potential students to join the Bruins family.

From 10am to 3pm, potential applicants and their families were able to tour the campus on their own or with a program-specific guide. Each department showcased its program highlights, learning space, any special equipment and previous projects, while volunteers and faculty floated around to answer any questions.

Student volunteers were able to give relatable insight and advice considering most of whom were attending the same open house as freshmen less than a year ago. Being able to feed off of how they felt at that time was an advantage in recruiting possible students.

“I was a little nervous to start post-secondary coming straight out of high school, but they reassured me about my worries and told me it was very hands-on,” says Tarrah Habibi, a first-year journalism student at Sheridan.

Habibi recalls talking to a first-year journalism student at the time who had a hand in convincing her that Sheridan was the right fit and there were going to be many support systems and great faculty to guide her on her post-secondary journey.

“I left feeling super excited to start my career in journalism, and left feeling warm and welcomed into the Sheridan environment,” says Habibi.

While the students were getting the hang of swaying students over to the Bruins side, the recruiting process was not a new feat for most of Sheridan’s faculty.

Journalism Professor Sherine Mansour has been teaching at Sheridan for 23 years, making this the 46th open house she has been part of.

As a veteran of the journalism department and overall faculty, Mansour attests to the quality of education and sense of community she has seen and experienced at Sheridan.

“Sheridan is an elite college…I have never met a more creative and talented group of professionals teaching across many, many programs at Sheridan,” says Mansour.

She also called attention to the fact that students are not only being taught by great teachers but also experts with years of experience in their respective fields.
