On Wednesday, April 26th, a driven group of students from Enactus Sheridan held workshops for approximately 200 Grade11 and Grade 12 students at Mississauga Secondary High School. These individuals are passionate about making a difference with their Project LIFE Financial Literacy Initiative.
Enactus members Tej Dhillon, Bruno Winkelmann, Hamlet Shahmirzaeian and David Robertson, led the class workshops respectively. Grade 12 math teacher, Mr.Stella, stressed the need for financial literacy skills due to the increased cost of living, and especially because the average student debt is significantly higher than before. Another teacher, Ms.Haddadi, was also hopeful her students would apply the financial skills taught at the workshop for their lives and futures.
The hands-on approach workshop had the students completing personal budgets. Project LIFE members worked with the students and catered to each student’s different expenses and concerns. Many participants mentioned that they are much more “awake and aware” of the impact their financial choices can make. Students understood that by saving more and using their income for needs, they can budget accordingly for their post-secondary lives and future aspirations.
A common trend amongst the students was “little things go a long way.” This implies that by using cash on smaller purchases, instead of credit cards, will help them in the long run by preventing the accumulation of debt. This process helps the students understand that credit is a tool that must be used sparingly. Students look forward to utilizing the apps provided in the workshop such as the Mint app. This application is used to help track their personal budgets and expense.
