Did you know that June 8 is World Oceans Day?

In 1992, Oceans Day was declared as June 8 in Rio de Janeiro at the Global Forum, a parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Also known as the Earth Summit, it is an event where non-government organizations and civil society can express their opinions on environmental issues.

The declaration came after an event organized on June 8 by the Oceans Institute of Canada with the support of the Canadian government called Oceans Day at the Global Forum – The Blue Planet. International experts, opinion leaders, and other ocean experts participated in the event.

In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly, led by Canada, decided to make June 8 the United Nations “World Oceans Day”. The day is an opportunity to raise global awareness about the benefits we derive from the oceans, and our duty to use them sustainably.

Every year on June 8, the United Nations marks World Oceans Day by holding an event run by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea. The event is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of our oceans and offers ways to understand how to interact with oceans sustainably.

This year’s virtual event is called The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods. It takes place on Tuesday, June 8th, from 10am to 5pm. The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods shows the wonders of the oceans, how they are a life source, and how they help support humankind and every other organism on the planet. There will be over 40 guest speakers at the event, including thought leaders, community speakers, entrepreneurs, celebrities, institutional partners, and cross-industry experts.

Last year’s event was called: Innovation For A Sustainable Ocean, 2019’s was Gender and The Ocean. There are also many events going on throughout the week. For more information, check out https://unworldoceansday.org/
